In class we have been able to use our computers and phones to utilize the web to find information that pertains to class. Media is everywhere because you can’t go on even one website these days without finding advertisements and links to other websites. We have been able to use electronic devises differently then other classes because we use twitter and facebook to stay in contact with the Doc. and other students within our groups.

The oldest mass media would have to be books or tablature. The oldest medium would probably be word of mouth. My favorite or at least most used form of media would probably be the internet because everything is just a second away. Internet is also the youngest form. pg. 10 Biagi (2010)

We have discussed media consolidation frequently in class because of the power that it gives to a relatively few individuals. Take a stance on this issue. Is it a good thing for America that only a few companies control what you see, read, hear, or search online? Cite at least three reasons.
Or is it a bad thing that only a few companies control what you see, read, hear or search online? Cite at least three reasons? Be prepared to discuss both sides during the oral exam, so that we know that you have done some critical analysis and understand both sides. Yes, you can do research on outside sources on this one and you must cite your sources (for example: Biagi, 2010 is our text.
I am against Media consolidation. It takes away from contributing ideas which would make it less diverse. Big companies are trying to control what you are allowed to know, which is pretty bad if we have a nation full of idiots. Also it takes away from competition. Pg. 15-16. Biagi (2010)
Reasons for it though would include: “large companies can offer advantages that small companies could never afford, Training for the employees and better working conditions”. Pg. 15. Biagi (2010)

Question #10
What is the name of the trade group that represents the music industry and successfully sued Napster?
The RIAA.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napster#Legal_challenges
Question #11
Describe why Napster was sued? (Be prepared to argue whether or not the decision was a fair one. In other words, was Napster a bunch of pirates, or were they taking advantage of the technology and acting as a marketing arm for the industry and increasing concert sales and merchandising for artists).
Napster was sued for sharing music, more importantly for leaking music that wasn’t even released yet. I honestly think file-sharing is alright because it’s a good way to promote a band most people wouldn’t know existed. And real fans will go buy an album or see the band live if they like them. If anything it’s putting the real squeeze not entirely on the band but the people producing and distributing the band, their label.
Question #12
Which company is the leader in legal music downloads and controls more than 70 percent of the market?
apple’s itunes.
Question # 13
Will the present music industry model morph or die because of iTunes, YouTube and Real Player and why briefly? Be prepared to defend your answer orally.
I think the music industry is just starting to blossom. Due to the fact that more and more technology is coming out for music players and what not artists are making repeated sales. Also free downloading is allowing people to find music they normally wouldn’t and fans will still buy albums and see the bands live.
Question #14
Did the music industry really win the downloading war, or did Amazon, Apple, YouTube and Microsoft win the downloading war? Why? Be prepared to discuss this orally.
No, because they are able to sell music way cheaper then people buying an album. A song is 99 cents. as apposed to buying an album for roughly 20 bucks.
Question #15
Amazon has emerged as the dominant leader in digital book downloads with its Kindle e-Reader, and Apple has emerged as the leader of TV shows, music and more with the iPod, iPhone and now the iPad.
Now that Apple is in the digital book business with the iPad (and to a lesser extent with the iPhone and iPodTouch) what do you believe will be the device that is embraced by the public: the iPad or the Kindle? Explain why? Be prepared to explain this orally
It depends. If people are on a budget I think they will go for the kindle. If they have money to play with they are going to probably go for the Ipad, due to the fact it has more features and apps.
Question #16
This is a tough question, but we have discussed it in class. Apple and Adobe are presently fighting over the use of Adobe Flash as a video format because it slows down one’s CPU on one’s computer. Apple has banned flash on the iPhone, iPad, and the iPodTouch. Adobe has done its own tests of iPhones and iPads and states that Flash runs great on iPhones and iPads and that Apple is engaging in controlling behavior that borders on being monopolistic. State your case – You are a lawyer for Apple and you believe that Apple has a right to determine what software runs on their devices like the iPad and iPhone. State your reason why? Or you are a lawyer for Adobe and you believe that consumers should get the same experience on their tablets and smartphones as they do with their computers, and since Adobe Flash is the dominant video software used online and you believe that Apple is acting like a monopoly. State your case. Give me at least three reasons. (Be prepared to discuss orally).
Apple is trying to act as a monopoly! If your computer can use programs such as adobe it is wrong for apple to not let it run on their accessories. limiting this use take away the consumer freedom. Thats something apple used to boast about, consumer and artistic freedom and what they’re doing does not back up their original believe. Apple is trying to dominate the web with its alternative use of html5(2). The web is open for everyone no one truly owns it. For awhile people were able to make flash compatible on iphones and what not but apple is trying to stop that now too. “iPhone Developer Program prohibiting the use of cross-compilers.”(1)
Question #17
Will the magazine business die, morph or thrive because of new devices like the iPad and the Kindle?

The magazine business will probably morph like every other industry because of the fact they still have an audience but the audience have moved to a new medium.
Question #18
Name the 7 words that you cannot say on the radio, and name the comedian who said them and was busted by the FCC when someone complained. For extra credit: explain the circumstances that led to the complaint and why the complaint was made.
A man complained saying it was the wrong time of day to broadcast such language. Apparently the guy had a kid in the car when it aired on the radio. George Carlin’s skit called Seven dirty words.
Question #19
Take a side. The FCC was created by President Roosevelt to protect the public, but has the FCC become too powerful and abused its authority, or do we need the FCC to regulate the media more because of the concentration of media ownership. Give me at least three reasons and be prepared to discuss orally.
Although I am against a lot of forms of regulations and what not, the FCC is important to have For regulating t.v. and radio. It is good that broadcast networks are being watched and can only merge when approved to prevent monopolies. It is also good because they censor language unsuitable for young kids and have set when that language is appropriate. Lastly they have a great rule in preventing the advertisement of products that don’t live up to what they claim they will do. pg. 11,226 Biagi (2010)
Question #20
How has Apple and Google been able to beat the music industry, the TV and film industry, the phone industry and the electronics industry and become the unquestioned leaders in their field?

Google has youtube for people to enjoy music and videos. Google also has the kindle which allows you to have and read digital books. Apple’s iPad also has that same capability.
